Burg Eltz is one of the castles we had recommended to us by numerous people and it's obvious why. It's like a fairy tale castle. They have a shuttle that leads to the castle but we opted to walk the 15 minutes through the forest. It was so beautiful. The forests in western Germany are dense and green and absolutely perfect.
After we rounded a corner the castle came into view. It was perfectly situated on a hill with a low stream/river running on the side of it. They used this as a source of income because they would tax anyone that went past. The Eltz family has owned it since the 12th century and still occupies a portion of the castle, which is why they don't allow any pictures inside. (I snapped the picture in the armory before they started the tour and told us) The treasury was impressive and full of so much treasure. It was a great tour.
