Our kids like the outdoors. They enjoying nature walks and hiking. The problem is that they have a condition we shall call, "Fun famililial amnesia". Each time we force them to do something they usually whine about it. After we have completed said activity they acknowledge that they had fun. We wanted to take them into the trails behind out house so we told them we were going on a snake hunt. Works every time. (Except for with Sarah of course. I've seen snakes and lizards in the foothills, so I wasn't lying.)
A boy in our neighborhood had invited Steven to go mountain biking a few times and been shot down. I told him to invite Steven to ride bikes to the fields to hunt for snakes and voila! it worked. Parenting genius. ;)
